The Brag is Worse than the Fight: Pre-Announcing Competitive Decisions in Oligopoly Markets

چکیده
We examine a duopolistic setting in which firms pre-announce their future competitive decisions (e.g., production quantities, capacity investments, etc.) before they actually undertake them. We show that, whether competing with substitute or complementary products, firms overstate their future actions in their pre-announcements, and choose higher real actions than the ones they would choose absent pre-announcements. If products are substitutes, firms overstate their future actions trying to preempt their rivals and, if products are complements, they do so to facilitate collusion. However, in both types of competition, we find that social welfare is maximized when the tolerance for this overstating behavior is at an intermediate level. ∗We would like to thank helpful comments from Mark Bagnoli, Tim Baldenius, Jeremy Bertomeu, Anne Beyer, Mingcherng Deng, Ron Dye, Pingyang Gao, Jon Glover, Bjorn Jorgensen, Chandra Kanodia, Oliver Kim, Pierre Liang, Jing Li, Martin Loeb, John O’Brien, Jose Plehn-Dujowich, Haresh Sapra, Jack Stecher, Phillip Stocken, Susan Watts, and participants at the Carnegie Mellon University workshop, University of Maryland workshop, and the 2010 Accounting Theory Conference at University of Chicago.

Pricing decisions for complementary products of competitive supply chains
This study considers pricing, production and transportation decisions in a Stackelberg game between three-stage, multi-product, multi-source and single-period supply chains called leader and follower. These chains consist of; manufacturers, distribution centers (DCs) and retailers. Competition type is horizontal and SC vs. SC. The retailers in two chains try to maximize their profit through pri...
متن کاملImpact of Participants’ Market Power and Transmission Constraints on GenCos’ Nash Equilibrium Point
Unlike perfect competitive markets, in oligopoly electricity markets due to strategic producers and transmission constraints GenCos may increase their own profit through strategic biddings. This paper investigates the problem of developing optimal bidding strategies of GenCos considering participants’ market power and transmission constraints. The problem is modeled as a bi-level optimizati...
متن کاملAnalyzing Capacity Withholding in Oligopoly Electricity Markets Considering Forward Contracts and Demand Elasticity
In this paper capacity withholding in an oligopolistic electricity market that all Generation Companies (GenCos) bid in a Cournot model is analyzed and the capacity withheld index, the capacity distortion index and the price distortion index are obtained and formulated. Then a new index, Distortion-Withheld Index (DWI), is proposed in order to measure the potential ability of market for capacit...
متن کاملSimultaneous Decentralized Competitive Supply Chain Network Design under Oligopoly Competition
This paper discusses a problem in which decentralized supply chains enter the market simultaneously with no existing rival chains, shape the supply chains’ networks, and set wholesale and retail prices in a noncooperative manner. All the chains produce either identical or highly substitutable products. Customer demand is elastic and price-dependent. A three-step algorithm is proposed to solve ...
متن کاملPlanning Marketing-Mix Strategies in the Presence of Interaction Effects
C spend millions of dollars on advertising to boost a brand’s image and simultaneously spend millions of dollars on promotion that many believe calls attention to price and erodes brand equity. We believe this paradoxical situation exists because both advertising and promotion are necessary to compete effectively in dynamic markets. Consequently, brand managers need to account for interactions ...
